The United Kingdom has officially opened applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarship, giving qualified Nigerians the opportunity to study for a fully funded master’s degree at leading universities across the UK.
The scholarship programme, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) together with partner organizations, will accept applications from August 4 to October 6, 2026.
Chevening is one of the UK’s most prestigious international scholarship schemes, designed for professionals with proven leadership ability and a strong commitment to driving positive change in their countries.
What the scholarship offers
Successful candidates will receive full financial support throughout their studies in the United Kingdom.
The award covers:
- Full tuition fees
- Monthly living allowance
- Return economy airfare to and from the UK
- Arrival and departure allowances
- Travel support for approved Chevening activities
- Leadership development opportunities
- Access to Chevening’s global alumni network
Recipients will undertake a one-year taught master’s programme at an eligible UK university.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to applicants from more than 140 countries and territories, including Nigeria.
According to the UK Government, ideal candidates are expected to demonstrate:

- Excellent communication and networking skills
- A clear commitment to improving their communities or professional sectors
- Academic capability to complete postgraduate studies

How to submit an application
Interested Nigerians are required to complete their applications through the official Chevening online portal.
Applicants will need to:
- Create an account on the Chevening application platform
- Confirm they meet the eligibility requirements
- Complete their personal, academic and employment information
- Select three eligible master’s degree courses at UK universities
- Provide details of two referees
- Answer compulsory essay questions on leadership, networking, career ambitions and study plans
- Submit their application before the closing deadline of October 6, 2026
Candidates are advised to prepare their essays carefully before uploading them and to save their applications regularly while completing the online form.
Selection process
The scholarship process will continue into next year.

- Initial assessment: From October 2026
- Interviews: March to April 2027
- Successful applicants notified: Mid-June 2027
- Academic session begins: September or October 2027

Since its launch in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship has supported more than 60,000 professionals worldwide.
Many former scholars have gone on to occupy senior positions in government, diplomacy, business, academia and civil society.
The UK Government says the programme is intended to equip future leaders with the knowledge, international exposure and professional networks needed to contribute meaningfully to development in their home countries after completing their studies.
