Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
Madagascar struck first in the 16th minute when E. Kari converted R. Ponti’s assist to give the island nation an early advantage.
Nigeria responded strongly before the break, with debutant George Ilenikhena restoring parity in the first minute of added time. Alex Iwobi provided the assist as the Super Eagles went into the interval level at 1-1.
The comeback was completed in the 65th minute when another debutant, Moses Usor, fired Nigeria ahead.
Semi Ajayi supplied the final pass for Usor, putting Nigeria 2-1 in front and giving Eric Chelle’s side a winning start to their Group L campaign.
Debutants Make Their Mark
The victory was particularly notable for Ilenikhena and Usor, who both made their first appearances for the Super Eagles after receiving their maiden senior call-ups for the September international window.
Their goals gave the newcomers an immediate impact as Chelle begins to introduce fresh options into the national team.
The three points put Nigeria on the front foot in Group L as the team begins its pursuit of a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament.
Nigeria will return to qualifying action on September 29 against Guinea-Bissau.
