The Lagos State Police Command has launched a special tactical unit, codenamed the “Command Sweepers Squad,” as part of intensified efforts to tackle rising criminal activities and strengthen security operations in Ikorodu and adjoining communities.
The initiative was unveiled by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, following growing public concern over incidents of violent crime and insecurity reported across parts of the Ikorodu axis.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, the command described the squad as a temporary intervention force established to restore public confidence and reinforce security presence in vulnerable areas.
According to the statement, the unit is made up of operatives drawn from multiple tactical formations, including the Rapid Response Squad, Eko Strike Force, Police Mobile Force units, as well as personnel from other security agencies and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
The squad has been strategically stationed in Ijede to enable rapid deployment and swift response operations across Ikorodu and neighbouring communities.
To support its operations, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund donated patrol vehicles and three Armoured Personnel Carriers to the command.
“The Squad has been strategically deployed to identify black spots and criminal hideouts to carry out intelligence-led operations, raids, stop-and-search duties, and confidence-building patrols aimed at flushing out criminal elements,” the statement said.
The police command assured residents that all operations would be conducted professionally and in line with the rule of law, while urging members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence.
The launch of the squad comes amid renewed security concerns in several parts of Lagos, with authorities intensifying measures to curb armed robbery, cult-related violence and other organized criminal activities.
