Uber is set to discontinue its ride-hailing services in Nigeria, bringing its operations in the country to an end from Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The company informed drivers of the decision in a message sent on Wednesday, saying they would no longer receive requests for passenger trips through the Uber app once the shutdown takes effect.
Uber said the decision followed a review of its business, but did not provide specific reasons for withdrawing from the Nigerian market.
“We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026,” the company told drivers.
The company acknowledged that the announcement would be difficult for members of its driver community and thanked them for their role in building its presence in Nigeria.
Uber said drivers had, over the years, helped provide residents with a convenient and affordable means of transportation.
It also highlighted the platform’s role in connecting passengers with independent drivers and facilitating urban mobility across the country.
The company said its Help Centre would remain available to drivers until September 24 to address questions and provide assistance relating to the closure.
The shutdown marks a significant change in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive ride-hailing market, where app-based transport services have become an important part of daily commuting in major cities.
Uber’s exit also comes after years of operating in the country and competing with other digital transportation platforms for passengers and drivers.
While the company did not outline what would happen to its wider Nigerian business beyond the ride-hailing service, its notice made clear that driver trip requests would cease from September 2.
Uber ended the message by expressing its appreciation to the drivers who had participated in its Nigerian operations and contributed to the growth of its platform.
For drivers and passengers who have relied on the service, the withdrawal is expected to prompt adjustments as they look to other ride-hailing and transportation options.
