Marvel Studios has officially unveiled British-Nigerian actor David Jonsson as the next Black Panther, ending years of speculation over who would inherit one of the franchise’s most iconic roles following the death of Chadwick Boseman.

The announcement was made during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel in San Diego, where the studio confirmed that the 32-year-old actor will portray Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, in Black Panther 3. The highly anticipated film is scheduled to premiere on 15 December 2028.

Rather than recasting Boseman’s original T’Challa, Marvel is continuing the story through the character’s son, first introduced in the closing scenes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

British-Nigerian roots

Jonsson was born in London on September 4, 1993, but proudly traces part of his heritage to Nigeria. He has previously described his family background as a blend of Nigerian, Sierra Leonean, Caribbean and Swedish ancestry.

Raised in Custom House, East London, he grew up in a multicultural community alongside his three older siblings.

His father worked as an information technology engineer, while his mother served in the Metropolitan Police.

Early struggles shaped his journey

Life was far from easy for the actor.

His parents separated when he was still a child, leaving him to grow up in a single-parent household. Jonsson has spoken openly about how the experience shaped his outlook and determination.

He was also expelled from school before transferring elsewhere to complete his education.

After finishing secondary school, he spent time in New York before returning to the UK, where he joined the National Youth Theatre and later secured a scholarship to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2016.

Career breakthrough

Jonsson first attracted widespread attention with his role as Augustus “Gus” Sackey in the acclaimed television drama Industry.

His performance earned praise from critics and opened the door to bigger opportunities in both television and film.

To prepare for the role, he reportedly immersed himself in the elite academic environment that shaped his character, visiting institutions such as Eton College and Oxford University.

Rising Hollywood profile

Since then, Jonsson has steadily established himself as one of Britain’s fastest-rising actors.

His film credits include:

  • Rye Lane
  • Alien: Romulus
  • The Long Walk
  • Wasteman

He is also attached to several upcoming projects, including Scandalous!, The Chaperones and a yet-to-be-titled film linked to musician Frank Ocean.

Award-winning performer

Jonsson’s growing reputation received a major boost when he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2025, recognizing him as one of the industry’s most promising talents.

The honour placed him among a select group of actors tipped for long-term success on the global stage.

More than an actor

Away from the camera, Jonsson is also building a career behind the scenes.

He served as an executive producer on Wasteman and co-founded the production company greyarea., which focuses on developing character-driven stories that explore complex human experiences.

Humble beginnings

Before making it in Hollywood, Jonsson worked several jobs to support himself, including shifts in pubs, bars and retail, while attending auditions and pursuing acting full-time.

He has recalled spending lunch breaks imagining the day he would land major film roles, a dream that has now culminated in becoming the face of one of Marvel’s biggest franchises.

A new era for Black Panther

Jonsson’s appointment marks a significant new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Instead of replacing Chadwick Boseman’s beloved portrayal of King T’Challa, Marvel has chosen to expand the story through the next generation, with Prince T’Challa II expected to step fully into the Black Panther mantle.

Director Ryan Coogler is returning to helm the third instalment, while Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington are also expected to feature in the film.
