One person was injured after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 pm on Saturday, 17 October 2026, prompting an emergency response from relevant agencies in the Federal Capital Territory.
NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office said it mobilized response teams after receiving information about the collapse. The FCT Fire Service was among the agencies contacted, while an ambulance team from the agency’s AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay was sent to the location to support rescue efforts.
An assessment of the site indicated that only part of the building had collapsed, according to a statement released by NEMA’s Press Unit on Sunday.
The agency said no fatalities were recorded. The injured person, identified as a worker at the site, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident is the latest in a series of building collapses reported in Abuja this year, raising renewed concerns about construction safety and compliance with building regulations.
On September 7, a three-storey building in Wuse Zone 4 collapsed hours after officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Department of Development Control reportedly sealed the property and directed occupants to leave over concerns about its structural condition.
Reports before the collapse indicated that the building had shown signs of distress. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene, although initial reports recorded no casualties.
A more deadly incident occurred on May 16 in Durumi 3, near Gudu Market, where a three-storey building under construction collapsed, killing at least five people and injuring several others.
Following the Durumi collapse, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered an investigation into the incident. The developer and an engineer associated with the project faced possible arrest as authorities examined the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
Wike also warned developers to adhere to approved building standards and cooperate with relevant authorities during inspections of construction sites.
