Veteran Nigerian actor and one of the country’s most celebrated screen and stage performers, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

Reports of his death emerged after his son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced it on Instagram on Wednesday.

British man admits drugging, raping wife for more than 20 years

Jacobs was a defining figure in Nigerian theatre, television and film, with a career spanning more than five decades. From his early years on the British stage and screen to his emergence as one of Nollywood’s most recognizable actors, he built a reputation for commanding performances and memorable portrayals of authority, wisdom and traditional leadership.

Early life and passion for acting

Jacobs was born on 11 July 1942, in Kano, although his family had roots in the Egba Alake community of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He spent his formative years in Kano, where his interest in performance developed through school drama, debating and church activities.

A performance by renowned Nigerian theatre practitioner Hubert Ogunde further strengthened his interest in acting and convinced him to pursue the profession seriously.

Training and career in Britain

Jacobs eventually moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

His training at RADA equipped him with a strong foundation in theatre and professional performance. He went on to work with several repertoire theatres in Britain and secured roles in television productions.

During the 1970s, he appeared in a number of British television programmes, including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, The Professionals, The Tomorrow People and Barlow at Large.

His international film credits included The Dogs of War in 1980, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend in 1985 and Roman Polanski’s Pirates in 1986.

Return to Nigeria and rise to Nollywood prominence

After establishing himself in Britain, Jacobs returned to Nigeria and became an important figure in the country’s rapidly expanding entertainment industry.

Over the course of his career, he appeared in hundreds of theatre, television and film productions, working across several generations of performers.

He became particularly associated with roles as kings, chiefs, traditional rulers, patriarchs and other influential figures. His distinctive voice, commanding screen presence and extensive theatrical training helped make him one of the most recognizable veteran actors in Africa.

Jacobs belonged to a generation of performers whose work helped shape the Nigerian film industry and contributed to the emergence of Nollywood as a major force in African cinema.

Awards and national honours

Jacobs’ contribution to acting earned him numerous awards and honours during his career.

In 2007, he received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

He was also presented with the Industry Merit Award for outstanding achievement in acting at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and received the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

His contribution to Nigerian arts was further recognized in 2011 when the Federal Government conferred on him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.

A celebrated partnership with Joke Silva

Beyond his acting career, Jacobs was part of one of Nigeria’s best-known entertainment partnerships with fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, whom he married.

Their relationship extended into their professional lives. Together, they founded the Lufodo Group, which had interests in film production, distribution and performing arts education.

The couple also established the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, helping to provide training for emerging performers and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s creative industry.

Later years and health struggles

Jacobs gradually withdrew from public appearances in his later years as his health deteriorated.

Silva had previously revealed that her husband was living with dementia with Lewy bodies, a degenerative condition that affected his health.

His condition also led to repeated false reports of his death. In June 2024, Silva publicly dismissed another report that Jacobs had died, saying he was alive and doing well. His family had rejected similar reports on earlier occasions.

He subsequently remained largely away from the public spotlight, although colleagues, fans and younger performers continued to acknowledge his influence on Nigerian theatre and cinema.

A legacy that spans generations

Jacobs’ influence extended well beyond the hundreds of characters he portrayed.

His career bridged Nigeria’s traditional theatre culture and the modern film and television industry. His professional experience in Britain also gave his work an international dimension.

Through acting, production and arts education, he contributed to the growth of the Nigerian entertainment industry and influenced generations of performers.

Alongside contemporaries such as Pete Edochie, Jacobs became synonymous with the generation of veteran actors who helped establish Nollywood’s distinctive style and identity.

For decades, audiences recognized him for roles that conveyed authority, wisdom and dignity. His performances, honours, mentorship and contributions to performing arts education secured his place in the history of Nigerian entertainment.

Olu Jacobs died in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving behind his wife, Joke Silva, his family, colleagues, students and generations of actors and filmmakers who were influenced by his work.
