The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, has condemned the continued killings and destruction of property in Plateau State, calling for urgent government action to restore peace and protect affected communities.
Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, expressed deep concern over the renewed violence in a statement issued on Tuesday, describing the loss of innocent lives and destruction of communities as a matter of grave concern.
The association called on President Bola Tinubu and the Plateau State Government to take immediate and decisive measures to stop the attacks, protect residents and restore lasting security in the affected areas.
Northern CAN said the repeated violence had exposed the need for a comprehensive review and strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture.
“The persistent destruction of lives and property points to the urgent need for a comprehensive review and strengthening of the nation’s security architecture,” the association said.
It stressed that Nigerians should be able to live, work, worship and raise their families without fear of attacks in their communities.
The Christian body also expressed solidarity with families who had lost loved ones, as well as residents whose homes, livelihoods and communities had been affected by the violence.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those whose homes, livelihoods, and communities have been affected by the violence,” it said.
Northern CAN urged the Federal Government to make the restoration of peace and security in troubled communities a priority, insisting that protecting citizens must remain a central responsibility of government.
“The safety and protection of citizens must remain at the centre of governance and national attention,” the association said.
The group also appealed to residents of Plateau State to remain united and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions.
It urged communities to pursue peace and justice while working collectively to protect lives and prevent further escalation.
“We equally call on the good people of Plateau State to remain united, reject actions capable of further escalating tensions, and work together in the pursuit of peace, justice, and the protection of their communities,” it said.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice and reconciliation, Northern CAN urged security agencies and other relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives.
“Northern CAN remains committed to peace, justice, reconciliation, and the protection of innocent lives. We urge all relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively before more lives are lost,” Pam said.
