Dolly Parton, the legendary country singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist whose career stretched across generations, has died at the age of 80.

Parton died on 25 August, according to her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who announced her death in a video shared on Instagram.

Seaver said the announcement was one Parton had asked him to make years earlier, a responsibility he had carried while serving as her head of security for more than two decades.

He described the loss as deeply painful for the family but said Parton’s life should ultimately be remembered with pride and gratitude.

According to Seaver, Parton had an extraordinary ability to create opportunities not only for herself and her relatives but also for generations of musicians, writers and aspiring entertainers.

“She never saw a door she couldn’t open,” he said, reflecting on the influence she had on people around her.

A career that crossed generations

Parton became one of the most recognizable figures in country music, building a career through her distinctive voice, songwriting and larger-than-life personality.

Her work produced numerous hit songs and earned her multiple Grammy Awards, while her success extended well beyond music.

She became a major film star through roles in movies including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, establishing herself as an entertainer whose appeal reached far beyond the country music audience.

Later in life, her story was adapted into a stage musical, Dolly, adding another chapter to a career that had already covered music, television, film and theatre.

Parton’s influence also extended to philanthropy and community projects, particularly through initiatives connected to education and children’s literacy.

A family loss

Parton’s death comes about 17 months after the death of her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, whom she married in 1966.

Dean died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage. Parton had often spoken warmly about their long relationship while keeping much of their private life away from the public spotlight.

In his tribute, Seaver said he believed Parton had now been reunited with Dean, her parents and other loved ones who had died before her.

He recalled being introduced to life on the road with Parton as a child and credited her with opening doors for members of the Parton family.

But her influence, he said, went far beyond those closest to her.

Parton became an inspiration to aspiring singers, songwriters, musicians and ordinary people around the world who admired her determination, generosity and ability to remain connected to her roots despite decades of fame.

‘So many things I want to achieve’

Parton’s death comes just days after she spoke publicly about still having ambitions and projects she hoped to pursue.

The comment has added poignancy to the news of her passing, coming as it did from an artist who remained active and creative well into her later years.

Seaver said the family would work with the team Parton had entrusted with her legacy to preserve her work and ensure her influence continues.

He also offered a deeply personal image of the woman behind the rhinestones and international fame.

Parton, he said, was a farmer like her father. While her father worked the land, she spent her life “farming songs and happiness.”

That image captures much of what made Parton unique. She built a global career without abandoning the humble roots that shaped her, becoming one of America’s most recognizable cultural figures while maintaining a strong connection to family, faith, music and her Appalachian upbringing.

For millions of fans, Parton’s songs were more than entertainment. They became part of family memories, played on radios, records, CDs, televisions and, eventually, streaming playlists.

Seaver’s message ended with a farewell to his aunt and the generations of family members who knew her by different names.

“Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly,” he said, adding that she would always be loved.

Dolly Parton’s legacy now belongs not only to her family but to the countless people who grew up with her music, films, stories and generosity.
