The 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will be decided in extra time after neither side could break the deadlock during regulation, with the score remaining 0-0 after 90 minutes at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The championship match now moves into two 15-minute periods of extra time. If the teams are still level after the additional 30 minutes, the winner will be determined by a penalty shootout.
Argentina will play the extra period with 10 men after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off deep into stoppage time at the end of regulation.
Fernández received his second yellow card of the match following a challenge on Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí, leaving the defending champions to complete the remainder of the final a man short.
Despite several opportunities at both ends, neither side was able to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested encounter, setting up a dramatic finish to the tournament.
