The Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State says students abducted from the engineering faculty of Nasarawa State University, Gudi campus, have regained their freedom following coordinated security operations that also led to the arrest of two suspected kidnappers.
The Nasarawa State Police Command disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Rahman Nansel.
According to the statement, the suspects identified as Abdullahi Yeyi Haro, described as the alleged leader of the kidnapping syndicate, and Basiru Abdullahi, both from Gudi community, were apprehended after what police described as sustained intelligence-driven tactical operations.
The command said the operation followed extensive investigations aimed at dismantling the criminal network linked to the abduction of the students.
Police confirmed that the abducted students had been safely released and reunited with their families.
“The victims are currently receiving medical attention and necessary support following their ordeal,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, commended officers involved in the operation, praising their professionalism and commitment to combating violent crime across the state.
He reiterated the command’s resolve to intensify efforts against kidnapping and other criminal activities in Nasarawa.
The police added that investigations were ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
Authorities also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely information that could help prevent crimes and improve rapid response operations.
“The command appreciates the support and cooperation of members of the public, whose timely information and collaboration greatly contributed to the success of the operation,” the statement added.
Kidnapping for ransom has remained a major security challenge across several parts of northern Nigeria, with students, travellers and rural residents frequently targeted by armed groups.
Security agencies have recently intensified operations against criminal gangs operating across Nasarawa and neighbouring states amid growing public concern over abductions and violent attacks.
