Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has stepped down from his position, alongside members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
Gusau announced the decision on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, according to the Super Eagles news account on X.
The mass resignation comes at a difficult time for Nigerian football following a series of disappointing results involving the country’s senior national teams.
The Super Falcons recently suffered a historic setback after losing 2-1 to South Africa in the qualifying play-off, ending Nigeria’s hopes of featuring at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It is the first time the Falcons have failed to qualify for the tournament.
The women’s team had also exited the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage after a defeat to Cameroon, while the Super Eagles missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the results on the pitch, the NFF has faced questions over its financial and administrative affairs. The federation has come under scrutiny over the management of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.
A separate fact-finding committee also raised allegations that some NFF board members and officials interfered in national team invitations for financial benefit.
Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the federation’s elective congress, scheduled to take place on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The sudden leadership change is likely to intensify calls for reforms within Nigerian football, with attention now turning to how the NFF will be managed ahead of the election and whether the federation can restore confidence among supporters, players and other stakeholders.
