Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.
Faye’s election was confirmed on Sunday during the regional bloc’s summit of Heads of State and Government held in Sierra Leone, where West African leaders gathered to deliberate on key regional issues.
The summit also approved the appointment of Biram Diop as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, replacing Dr Omar Touray, whose tenure has come to an end.
Leaders at the meeting are expected to deliberate on measures aimed at accelerating regional integration, enhancing cooperation among member states, and addressing pressing challenges related to peace, security, governance and economic development across West Africa.
