Three security operatives were killed after suspected gunmen launched an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State late Monday night, authorities and local sources have confirmed.
The attackers reportedly stormed the institute at about 11:40 p.m., opening fire and triggering a fierce gun battle with security personnel stationed at the country’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
Sources within the institute said security forces swiftly responded to the assault, engaging the gunmen and preventing them from gaining access to sensitive areas of the facility.
A staff member, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to comment publicly, said two soldiers and a police officer attached to the institute’s security detail lost their lives during the confrontation.
The source noted that the prompt intervention of security personnel helped contain the attack and prevented further casualties or damage within the institution.
Residents of nearby communities also reported hearing prolonged gunfire, which caused panic among locals.
A resident of Kuru community in Jos South Local Government Area, Bulus Haruna, said many residents were alarmed by the sounds of heavy gunfire that lasted several minutes during the night.
In an official statement, NIPSS confirmed that an incident occurred at the institution but assured participants, staff members and residents that the situation had been brought under control.
The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, said security personnel and relevant agencies responded promptly to the threat.
According to the institute, there is currently no danger to participants, employees, residents or facilities, and all scheduled activities are continuing without disruption.
NIPSS said security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue.
The institute added that it is working closely with relevant authorities and will provide verified information as investigations progress.
Management also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of members of the NIPSS community and commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by security personnel during the response to the attack.
The motive behind the assault remains unclear as investigations continue.
