The calm of Rivers State is once again disturbed after the House of Assembly accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of obstructing a Supreme Court judgment. This new development deepens the already existing power tussle between the legislature and executive arms in the oil-rich state, which continues to raise concern over governance and political order in the region.
State Assembly’s Grievances Against the Governor
During an all-staff meeting, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly expressed their disappointment stating that the Fubara administration is willfully sitting on a Supreme Court ruling that is important to the state’s political and administrative equilibrium. Even if the particulars of the ruling are contentious, the lawmakers are adamant the governor’s noncompliance has further exacerbated the still existing hardships of government officials.

His press team put out a statement claiming that all legal procedures needed to be adhered to and executed before any actions could be taken. They claimed that ‘all allegations are devoid of any intent to obstruct any Supreme Court judgement’. The statement went on, ‘the Rivers State Government will always act in the best interests of it citizens within the framework of the law’
Deepening Political Tensions
The political tensions in Rivers State can be traced back to a feud between the present governor and the lawmakers aligned with Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who was Wike’s predecessor. The tensions reached their peak when a faction of the House attempted to vote the Governor out leading to mass protests that required the involvement of national politicians to quell.
As per political experts, the current deadlock represents yet another phase in the fight for dominance over the political control of Rivers State. A political science lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Charles Okorie remarked, “This is more than a legal issue. It is a political game of moves and check. With 2027 elections on the corner, the moves by the governor and the Assembly members are being projected for long term walking.”
