The Federal Government of Nigeria has categorically denied claims alleging its endorsement or involvement in the recent failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaye, debunked viral social media reports suggesting that either Nigeria or the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) backed the unconstitutional plot. He described the narrative as baseless, mischievous, and a calculated attempt to tarnish Nigeria’s international reputation.
Ambassador Enikanolaye stressed that Nigeria remains a staunch defender of constitutional order and democratic governance across West Africa, the Sahel, and the broader continent. He reiterated that the nation will never support an illegal takeover of power, regardless of the individuals or countries involved.
Addressing the close ties between the two nations, the minister highlighted that Nigeria shares deep historical and cultural bonds with Niger and seeks only peace, security, and development for its neighbour. He noted that resorting to force to resolve political differences contradicts Nigeria’s long-standing foreign policy principles.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further pointed to its official dispatch from August 30, 2026, which expressed concern over the political situation in Niger and called for a peaceful, inclusive return to democratic stability.
Reaffirming the country’s diplomatic stance, the minister stated that Nigeria stands firmly behind the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, as well as the African Union’s policy of zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government. The Federal Government urged members of the public, both locally and in the diaspora, to disregard misleading videos and false online narratives intended to cause regional division.
