Nigerian-British actress Wunmi Mosaku is emerging as one of the standout stars of the 98th Academy Awards, as the film industry prepares for Hollywood’s biggest night on March 15, 2026.
Mosaku, 39, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Sinners, a critically acclaimed supernatural drama directed by Ryan Coogler. The film has become the most nominated production of this year’s Oscars, securing 16 nominations and positioning itself as the dominant force of the awards season.
The Nigerian-born, Manchester-raised actress has earned widespread praise for portraying Annie, a spiritual priestess whose emotional grounding anchors the film’s blend of horror, history and social commentary.
“This is the moment that I have worked 20 years towards,” Mosaku said while reflecting on her career and the intense awards season.
From Nigeria to Global Stardom
Born in Nigeria and raised in Manchester, United Kingdom, Mosaku moved to Britain with her family as a baby and grew up in South Manchester.
Her career spans television, streaming and blockbuster films. She gained early recognition in British drama Damilola, Our Loved Boy, which earned her a British Academy Television Award. She later appeared in notable productions including Loki, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Lovecraft Country, His House, Black Mirror, and Luther.
However, Sinners, which grossed $368 million worldwide, has become the defining project of her career.
Critics have described Mosaku’s performance as the film’s “beating heart,” bringing emotional depth to a story exploring race, spirituality and cultural identity.
Strong Awards Season Momentum
Mosaku enters the Oscars race with significant momentum. Earlier this year, she won Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA Awards, cementing her status as a strong contender in the category.
The cast of Sinners, which includes Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, also received Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Despite the pressures of awards season, Mosaku has remained focused on family life as she prepares for maternity leave while juggling global publicity events.

Mosaku’s path to Hollywood recognition was far from easy. The graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art often spoke about navigating an industry with few working-class actors and limited roles for Black women.

Beyond awards, Mosaku says her goal remains simple: to tell stories that change how audiences view humanity.
“My intention is to be part of projects that make people look at humanity differently,” she said.
