European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde will leave her position on 7 February 2027, several months before the end of her eight-year term, which is scheduled to expire in October 2027.
The Frankfurt-based central bank announced the decision on Thursday, saying Lagarde had informed the ECB Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa that she would step down on the stated date.
Her departure will come ahead of the formal end of her tenure, setting the stage for the selection of a successor to lead the eurozone’s central bank.
