Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo has brought a Nigerian twist to the world of Wicked, starring in a comic parody during her hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live UK on 24 October.
The sketch, titled Nigerian Wicked, transforms the popular musical into an exaggerated Nollywood-style production, with Erivo playing Glinda and comedian Ayoade Bamgboye taking on the role of Elphaba.
Set in a fictional location called “LagOz”, the parody draws on familiar elements of Nigerian cinema, including dramatic confrontations and heightened storytelling. It also introduces an “Emerald, White and Emerald City” as a playful reimagining of the musical’s iconic setting.
The sketch adds contemporary celebrity culture to the mix, with Glinda setting her sights on a Birkin bag while Elphaba hopes the Wizard will grant her a “skinny BBL that defies gravity”.
The performance has generated attention online, with viewers responding to the blend of Wicked references, Nigerian cultural details and the dramatic style often associated with Nollywood productions.
Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the Wicked film adaptations, took on the contrasting role of Glinda for the parody, showcasing another side of her performance range through the comedy sketch.
