Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, have regained their freedom days after they were abducted near the university.
The students were reportedly kidnapped last Sunday along the route between the FUTO campus and Ihiagwa community.
The university confirmed their release in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu.
According to the institution, both students have been taken to the FUTO Medical Centre, where they are receiving treatment and psychological support following their ordeal.
“The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has confirmed the safe release of the two female students who were abducted during a security incident on campus on Sunday, September 6, 2026,” the statement said.
“The students are currently receiving medical care and psychological support at the University Medical Centre.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie, has also visited the students and met with them, the university said.
FUTO management commended the police and other security agencies for their intervention in the case and assured students, workers, parents and other members of the university community that efforts were being intensified to improve security.
The institution said additional security measures were being maintained in collaboration with relevant security agencies to prevent further incidents.
The university also appealed to members of its community to remain calm, stay alert and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities.
