Popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40, triggering an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and among fans on social media.
Multiple Nigerian media outlets reported on Tuesday that the actor died on Monday after a prolonged illness linked to cancer, though an official statement from his family had yet to be released as of press time.
The reports said Ekubo had been battling health complications privately for several months, with his prolonged absence from public appearances and social media fueling speculation about his condition.
His last known post on social media was made in December 2024, shortly after his widely publicized engagement collapse drew intense online attention.
Known for his charismatic screen presence, fashion appeal and roles in romantic dramas and comedy films, Ekubo rose to prominence as one of Nollywood’s most recognizable actors over the past decade.
He appeared in several successful productions including Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, A Sunday Affair, and Afamefuna, earning a reputation for versatility and strong audience appeal.
Tributes from colleagues began flooding social media shortly after reports of his death emerged.
Actress Funke Akindele described the news as painful, while actor Bolanle Ninalowo and several other Nollywood figures also shared emotional messages mourning the late actor.
Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe wrote that Nollywood had lost “a rare soul,” reflecting the shock felt across the industry.
While reports about the specific nature of his illness have varied, some outlets linked his death to complications from cancer. However, no official medical confirmation had been publicly released.
Ekubo first gained national attention after emerging as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest before transitioning fully into acting, where he built a successful career spanning film, television and brand endorsements.
His death comes amid growing concern in Nigeria over rising cases of serious illnesses among younger public figures, with social media discussions also focusing on health awareness and the importance of regular medical checks.
Fans across Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and other parts of Africa continued posting tributes online Tuesday evening as the entertainment industry mourned one of its most familiar faces.
