The long-awaited biopic Michael has stormed the global box office, pulling in nearly $220 million worldwide and debuting at number one in North America with an impressive $97 million opening weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the film traces the rise of Michael Jackson from child star to global music legend. The late singer is portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
Box office analysts say the film’s opening marks one of the biggest debuts ever for a musical biopic.
“It’s a record-shattering opening for a musical biography,” said industry analyst David A. Gross, noting that audiences have embraced the film as a nostalgic celebration of Jackson’s life and music.
However, critics have been less enthusiastic, with many arguing the film glosses over the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life, including longstanding allegations of misconduct. Despite this, a sequel is already in development.
In second place, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie added $21.2 million, pushing its global total past $775 million after several weeks in cinemas.
Third place went to Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, which earned $13.2 million and has now grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.
The horror film The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin, came in fourth with $5.6 million, while The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, rounded out the top five with $2.6 million.
The early success of Michael highlights the enduring global appeal of Jackson’s music and legacy, even as debates around his personal life continue.
With strong audience turnout and international momentum, the film is expected to remain a major box office force in the coming weeks, especially as anticipation builds for a planned follow-up instalment.
