The Debt Management Office (DMO) has announced the commencement of subscriptions for the August 2026 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Savings Bonds, offering investors annual interest rates of up to 14.96 per cent.
According to the agency, the offer features two investment options designed for retail investors seeking secure, government-backed fixed-income securities.
The first is a two-year bond maturing on August 12, 2028, with an annual coupon rate of 13.96 per cent, while the second is a three-year bond due on August 12, 2029, carrying an annual return of 14.96 per cent.
Subscription window
The DMO said the offer will open on Monday, August 3, 2026, and close on Friday, August 7, 2026, while successful subscriptions will be settled on August 12, 2026.
Interest payments will be made every quarter on November 12, February 12, May 12 and August 12 throughout the life of each bond.
Investment requirements
The bonds are priced at ₦1,000 per unit.
Interested investors can subscribe with a minimum investment of ₦5,000, while additional investments must be made in multiples of ₦1,000.
The maximum subscription allowed for a single investor is ₦50 million.
Government-backed investment
The DMO stated that the FGN Savings Bond is fully backed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, making it one of the country’s low-risk investment instruments.
The agency also noted that the bonds qualify as trustee investments under the Trustee Investment Act and enjoy recognition under relevant tax laws covering eligible institutional investors, including pension funds.
In addition, the securities are listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), allowing investors to trade them in the secondary market if they choose to exit before maturity.
The bonds also qualify as liquid assets for banks when calculating regulatory liquidity ratios.
Encouraging savings culture
The FGN Savings Bond programme was introduced to encourage a stronger savings culture among Nigerians while giving individuals access to government securities that were previously dominated by large institutional investors.
By offering relatively affordable entry requirements and fixed quarterly income, the programme provides retail investors with an opportunity to preserve capital while earning predictable returns over the investment period.
