A large-scale military operation in Zamfara State has reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 300 suspected armed bandits, in what authorities describe as one of the most significant offensives against criminal groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West.
The operation was carried out over two days in Gummi Local Government Area, where troops launched coordinated assaults on suspected bandit positions as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for attacks across the region.
Zamfara State Commissioner for Information, Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa, said the operation dealt a heavy blow to the armed groups, with security forces inflicting substantial casualties during the offensive.
Residents of communities in the area said local vigilante groups supported the military during the operation, which reportedly began on Wednesday night and continued into the following morning. According to local accounts, the confrontation erupted after armed men allegedly made away with large numbers of stolen livestock.
Witnesses described intense fighting that lasted for several hours before security personnel regained control of the area.
Community sources also claimed that an earlier attempt by security forces to raid the same network’s hideout had been unsuccessful after troops encountered overwhelming resistance from the heavily armed group.
The Zamfara State Government said the latest operation represents an important step in ongoing efforts to restore security across communities that have endured years of attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling.
North-West Nigeria has remained one of the country’s most volatile regions, with heavily armed criminal gangs carrying out raids on villages, abducting residents for ransom, stealing livestock and extorting farming communities.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that some of these criminal groups have developed operational links with extremist organizations, creating a more complex security challenge for authorities.
Nigeria continues to confront multiple security threats across different parts of the country, including insurgency in the North-East, widespread banditry in the North-West and North-Central, and organized criminal activities affecting several rural communities.
Military operations have intensified in recent months as security agencies seek to disrupt armed groups, rescue kidnap victims and restore stability in areas affected by persistent violence.
