The rescue of dozens of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State has brought relief to many families, but for the relatives of one teacher who was killed while in captivity, the development has reopened painful memories of an irreplaceable loss.
Michael Oyedokun, one of the teachers abducted during the May 15 attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, did not survive the ordeal after he was reportedly killed by the kidnappers while being held hostage.
While the remaining victims have now regained their freedom following a coordinated security operation, members of Oyedokun’s family say the successful rescue cannot erase the grief of losing a loved one.
In an emotional message shared on social media, a family member said they were thankful that the rescued pupils and teachers would finally be reunited with their families but noted that their own family would never experience such a reunion.
The family described the teacher’s death as a painful reminder of the human cost of insecurity, saying his absence would continue to be deeply felt.
They also paid tribute to his memory, describing him as a dedicated educator whose life was cut short while in the line of duty.
The victims were abducted when armed attackers stormed schools in Oriire Local Government Area, sparking weeks of intensive rescue efforts involving multiple security agencies.
Although the successful operation has been widely welcomed, the death of Oyedokun continues to cast a shadow over the rescue, underscoring the lasting impact of the tragedy on families directly affected by the attack.
