The Lagos State Government has rescheduled some papers in the ongoing 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) following the declaration of the annual Oro Festival in parts of Ikorodu Division.
According to the state government, all BECE papers originally slated for Wednesday, July 1, in the affected areas will now be held on Tuesday, July 7.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the Lagos State Examinations Board, which said the adjustment followed consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of candidates, examination officials and members of the public.
Authorities explained that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to guarantee the orderly conduct of the examination while avoiding disruptions associated with the traditional festival.
The ministry clarified that the rescheduling affects only the papers fixed for July 1, while all other examinations in the 2026 BECE timetable will proceed as originally scheduled.
Candidates have been advised to obtain the revised timetable from their respective schools and prepare for the rescheduled examinations on July 7.
The state government expressed regret over any inconvenience the change may cause and appealed to parents, guardians, school administrators and candidates for their understanding and cooperation.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a credible, transparent and seamless examination process across the state.
The Oro Festival is a traditional Yoruba religious observance celebrated in several communities, particularly within Ikorodu Division. The festival is characterized by male-only rites and temporary restrictions on movement in designated areas as part of longstanding cultural and religious practices.
