South African club Chippa United have officially confirmed the departure of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, following a formal request by the Nigerian international to leave the club.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Eastern Cape-based side, nicknamed the Chilli Boys, said the decision was reached after “careful consideration,” granting the 29-year-old his release and bringing an end to a highly successful four-year tenure.
Nwabali joined Chippa United in 2021 and went on to establish himself as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the South African Premiership. He made 76 appearances, recorded 25 clean sheets, and became a defensive mainstay, performances that eventually earned him the club captaincy.
Nwabali’s reputation rose sharply following his breakout performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final. His penalty-saving heroics against South Africa in the semi-final cemented his status as one of the tournament’s standout goalkeepers.
Since returning from national duty at the 2025 AFCON, however, Nwabali has yet to feature for Chippa United. The club instead handed starting roles to Dumisani Msibi and Elson Sithole, who each started one match this year in wins over Orbit College and Durban City, respectively.
In its farewell message, Chippa United praised Nwabali for his contribution to the club, commending his professionalism and commitment throughout his time in the Eastern Cape.
“We thank Stanley Nwabali for his service, dedication and leadership,” the club said. “His contribution to Chippa United will always be appreciated.”
Neither Nwabali nor his representatives have disclosed his next destination, but his strong club record and international exposure have fuelled speculation about a potential move to a bigger African side or a European club.
With his contract now terminated by mutual agreement, the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper becomes a free agent, positioning him for what could be the biggest move of his career as interest continues to build across the continent.
