Troops under Sector 7 of Operation Enduring Peace have arrested six suspected arms suppliers during a security operation in Kaduna State, recovering seven firearms and a vehicle allegedly used for transporting the weapons.
The suspects were apprehended on Monday at the Samaru checkpoint in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area during a routine stop-and-search operation, according to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Oteh.
Military authorities said the suspects were travelling in an ash-coloured Mercedes-Benz bearing registration number EDO GUE-722-LV when troops stopped the vehicle for inspection.
A search of the car reportedly led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and four sub-machine guns. The vehicle was also impounded.
Preliminary findings indicated that the group was travelling from Jos in Plateau State to Niger State at the time of the interception.
The military said one of the suspects attempted to flee during the operation but was quickly apprehended. He sustained injuries in the process and is receiving treatment while assisting with ongoing investigations.
All six suspects, along with the recovered weapons and vehicle, are being held in military custody as investigations continue.
Operation Enduring Peace said the interception forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the movement of weapons and dismantle supply networks supporting criminal and terrorist groups operating within its area of responsibility.
The military also appealed to residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies to aid ongoing operations.
