Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian international winger, has been officially unveiled as Atletico Madrid’s newest signing, with the Spanish club confirming an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer on Monday.
The 28-year-old forward rose to prominence after scoring a historic hat-trick in Atalanta’s victory over Bayer Leverkusen to win the Europa League in 2024. This season, he has contributed three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for the Italian side.
Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. He later joined RB Leipzig, with loan stints at Fulham and Leicester City, before completing a permanent move to Atalanta in 2022.
Atletico Madrid’s signing comes amid a push by coach Diego Simeone to reinforce the attack following the departures of Giacomo Raspadori to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher to Tottenham. The club has also struggled for goals recently, with striker Julian Alvarez failing to score in his last 11 La Liga matches.
“I’m thrilled to join Atletico Madrid. It’s a top club with big ambitions, and I’m ready to give my best for the team and fans,” Lookman said at the press unveiling at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Lookman’s arrival adds pace, creativity, and scoring potential to Atletico’s frontline as the club seeks to challenge for domestic and European honors this season. He will now begin training with the first team, with fans eagerly anticipating his La Liga debut.
