Iran has accused the United States of violating a ceasefire agreement after American forces reportedly carried out overnight strikes in the Hormozgan region near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement reported by Reuters, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the attacks amounted to a “gross violation” of the ceasefire and warned that Tehran would respond to what it described as unjustified aggression.
“The United States committed a gross violation of the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region in the past 48 hours,” the ministry said.
“Iran holds the US regime responsible for all the consequences resulting from these aggressive and unjustified actions.”
The ministry added that Iran would not hesitate to defend itself against further attacks.
According to the U.S. military, the strikes were launched on Monday against targets in southern Iran, including boats allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines and missile launch positions.
American officials described the operations as “defensive actions” aimed at protecting maritime security and maintaining safe navigation around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
The latest exchange has further heightened tensions in the region despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to preserve a fragile ceasefire following weeks of conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the standoff, with concerns growing over global energy supplies and the potential impact of renewed hostilities on international shipping and oil markets.
