The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has dismissed as unfounded reports circulating on social media alleging an impending terrorist attack and planned mass abduction on its Nsukka campus, assuring students, staff and visitors that there is no verified security threat to the institution.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Agha Egwu, the management said it had not received any credible intelligence from security agencies to substantiate the claims contained in the viral online post.
The university described the report as misleading and urged members of the public to disregard unverified information capable of creating fear, panic and unnecessary disruption within the academic community.
“The University Management wishes to assure staff, students, parents, guardians and visitors that there is no credible security intelligence or verified threat indicating any planned terrorist attack or mass abduction on the campus,” the statement said.
Security Reinforced Across Campus
While maintaining that there is no known threat, the university announced a series of precautionary measures aimed at strengthening security and enhancing surveillance across the campus.
According to the management, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army have been deployed to strategic locations and key entry points within the institution to support the university’s internal security architecture.
The institution also disclosed that some access gates leading into the Nsukka campus would be temporarily closed as part of efforts to improve monitoring and control movement within the university environment.
Motorcycle Operations Suspended
As part of the enhanced security measures, the university announced an immediate ban on motorcycle operations within the campus.
Under the new directive, motorcycles will no longer be allowed beyond designated entry points except those used by authorized security personnel.
Staff members and other authorized users who rely on motorcycles for transportation have been advised to park them at approved locations outside the campus before proceeding to their respective destinations.
The management said the decision was taken to reduce security vulnerabilities and improve access control across the institution.
Call for Vigilance
UNN urged members of the university community to remain calm and continue their academic, administrative and social activities without fear.
The institution, however, encouraged students, staff and residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement, individual or activity to the university’s security department or relevant law enforcement agencies.
The management stressed that maintaining safety on campus requires collective responsibility and cooperation among all stakeholders.
“Security is a shared responsibility. We urge everyone to remain alert and report any suspicious activity through the appropriate channels,” the statement added.
Warning Against Misinformation
The university also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, particularly anonymous social media posts designed to provoke anxiety and uncertainty.
It appealed to parents, guardians, students and members of the public to rely on official communication channels for information relating to security and campus activities.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of staff and students, the management said it would continue to work closely with security agencies to maintain a safe, secure and conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and community service.
UNN remains one of Nigeria’s foremost higher institutions and has consistently maintained a collaborative security framework with law enforcement agencies to safeguard lives and property within its campuses.
