A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced a school teacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil of El-Bossaa Nursery and Primary School, Epe.
Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after finding Isaac guilty of sexually assaulting the child on March 10, 2022.
The judge also ordered that Isaac’s name be entered in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register in accordance with Sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law, 2021.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency disclosed the development in a statement on Friday.
Court Finds Prosecution Proved Case
The court held that the prosecution had established the offence beyond reasonable doubt, including that the victim was a child and that Isaac had sexual intercourse with her.
The survivor, who was nine years old when she testified, was described by the court as a credible and consistent witness.
According to the agency, she identified Isaac in court and recounted how he, whom she knew as “Master Isaac”, took her into the school’s toilet and sexually assaulted her.
Her account was supported by evidence from her mother, who noticed blood on the child’s underwear and vagina after she returned home from school.
Medical evidence from the Mirabel Centre also corroborated the prosecution’s case and provided evidence of penetration.
Judge Rejects Teacher’s Defence
Justice Oshodi rejected Isaac’s denial that he had remained within the school premises on the day of the incident.
The judge noted that Isaac’s own testimony placed him at the school at the relevant time, while the survivor independently identified him as the person who took her into the toilet.
The court also dismissed his alibi defence and rejected suggestions that the child could have been sexually abused by her stepsister.
The judge further dismissed the argument that the school toilet was too small for the assault to have taken place.
In sentencing Isaac, Justice Oshodi said he had abused the trust placed in him by the survivor and her family.
The judge noted that Isaac had been the child’s teacher and had also been entrusted by parents in the community to transport their children.
Court Orders Protection for Survivor
Justice Oshodi directed the prosecution to take “immediate steps” under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law, 2022, to provide whatever protection and support the survivor and her family require.
Isaac was prosecuted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The provision prescribes life imprisonment for anyone convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.
