President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Honourable Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
Tuggar is understood to have stepped down ahead of a potential political move toward the 2027 elections.
The President also nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to Senate confirmation.
The appointments were announced in a statement on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Chief Bayo Onanuga, who said the changes are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic strategy.
“These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement read.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to take charge of Nigeria’s external relations at a time when the administration is placing increased focus on economic diplomacy, regional stability, and international partnerships.
The presidency highlighted her extensive experience, noting that she brings “decades of diplomatic experience and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s engagement with the global community.”
Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat, has served in multiple international postings, including Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi. He most recently worked as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations.
According to the presidency, his nomination is intended to ensure continuity and strengthen institutional capacity within Nigeria’s foreign service.
President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to prioritize national interest, deepen economic diplomacy, and improve the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
The leadership change comes as Nigeria seeks to recalibrate its foreign policy to better support economic growth and expand its global influence.
