Ghana has been selected to host the 2027 edition of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, marking a major milestone for the country’s football development ambitions and continental standing.
The decision was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football in a formal communication to the Ghana Football Association, which described the move as a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s capacity to stage a top-tier tournament.
In a statement, the GFA said CAF’s endorsement reflects trust in its ability to deliver a competition that meets “the highest standards of youth football” in Africa.
Ghana last hosted the tournament in 1999, when the national U-20 team, the Black Satellites, lifted the trophy on home soil. The 2027 edition will also coincide with the country’s 70th independence anniversary, adding symbolic weight to the event.
CAF is expected to work closely with local organizers to ensure smooth delivery, with focus areas including infrastructure, security, logistics and fan experience.
The U-20 AFCON remains one of Africa’s most important talent pipelines, having produced players who went on to shine at global level.
Hosting the tournament is likely to boost investment in sports infrastructure and provide a platform for emerging Ghanaian talents to perform on home ground.
Officials say preparations will begin soon, with a Local Organizing Committee to be set up in the coming months.
Beyond the matches, the tournament is expected to draw fans, scouts and stakeholders from across the continent, reinforcing Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s leading football hubs.
