FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a stinging rebuke following the chaotic conclusion of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal.
While the match itself was a display of top-tier football, the scenes following the final whistle, which saw Senegal crowned champions over Morocco on their own home soil, were marred by crowd trouble and aggressive behaviour from a section of the travelling Senegalese support.
The “unacceptable scenes” cited by Infantino occurred immediately after the final whistle at the Stade Mohammed V.
For instance, several fans breached the security perimeter as the trophy presentation was being prepared, and projectiles were reportedly launched at the Moroccan players during their victory lap and toward the VIP rostrum where CAF and FIFA officials were seated.
Videos circulating on social media show heated altercations between Senegalese supporters and local security personnel in the stands, leading to several arrests.
In a formal address this morning, Monday, 19 January 2026, Infantino expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in the “global game.”
“What we witnessed last night in Casablanca was a stain on a magnificent tournament. The scenes of aggression and the lack of respect shown toward the champions and officials are completely unacceptable. Football is built on the values of respect and safety. We will be working closely with CAF to ensure a full investigation and to ensure that such incidents are never repeated.” – Gianni Infantino.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to convene an emergency disciplinary committee. Senegal’s Football Federation (FSF) could face several penalties including, financial penalties for the failure of their traveling fans to adhere to stadium protocols.
Senegal may also be forced to play their next official home matches (likely World Cup Qualifiers) behind closed doors.
While rare for fan behavior, a “suspended” points deduction is a possibility if the report shows players or officials were directly endangered.
Despite the post-match controversy, the result stands as a historic moment
Moroccan authorities have defended their security arrangements, stating that the sheer “emotional intensity” of the final was managed as best as possible. They noted that over 100 people were detained for questioning following the skirmishes.
