The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has officially announced a 50% reduction in train fares nationwide for the 2025 Yuletide season. This directive, approved by the Federal Government, aims to ease the high cost of transportation for Nigerians travelling to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
The announcement was made by the Managing Director of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, who noted that the discount is a strategic intervention to cushion the effects of the current economic climate.
The half-price discount applies to all major corridors currently served by the NRC, including: Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS); Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS); Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS); Port Harcourt-Aba Train Service; and the Lagos Intra-City Mass Transit (Blue & Red Lines).
Unlike the 100% free train rides offered in previous years (2023 and 2024), the NRC opted for a 50% discount this year to address specific operational challenges as the NRC noted that completely free services in the past attracted “jolly riders” – individuals who boarded trains without a specific destination, leading to severe overcrowding and discomfort for genuine travelers.
The 50% model allows the NRC to recover at least half of its operational costs (primarily diesel and security), ensuring the corporation can maintain the frequency of trips without straining the federal treasury.
Furthermore, by maintaining a ticketing system (even at half price), the NRC can better manage passenger manifests and security profiling, which is critical given the current security alerts in the North.
Notably, and due to the expected surge in demand, passengers are strongly advised to use the NRC E-ticketing app or website to secure seats at least 48 hours in advance.
Security personnel at all stations have also been instructed to enforce strict “No ID, No Entry” policies. Please carry a valid NIN slip, Voter’s Card, or Driver’s License.
All passengers are expected to arrive at the station at least one hour before departure to allow for the increased security screening measures implemented for the holidays.
