Fresh fears have gripped residents of Kebbi State after suspected terrorists launched a late-night attack on Tsamiya community in Bagudo Local Government Area, abducting one resident and setting fire to a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) checkpoint, a brothel and a residential building.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday night, has heightened security concerns in parts of the state already battling recurring attacks by armed criminal groups.
According to the Kebbi State Police Command, the assailants stormed the community and began shooting indiscriminately before carrying out the arson attacks.
Police spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, identifying the kidnapped victim as Alhaji Yusuf Bazamfare.
“The assailants invaded the area, fired sporadically, and set ablaze a makeshift checkpoint belonging to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), a local brothel, and the residence of one Sule Mai Goge. One Alhaji Yusuf Bazamfare was also kidnapped during the incident,” the statement said.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State ordered the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the affected community to reinforce security and prevent further attacks.
The police said joint security operations involving other security agencies have already been launched to rescue the abducted resident and apprehend those responsible.
“The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have commenced investigations and intensified operations aimed at rescuing the kidnapped victim and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the command added.
Authorities appealed to residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence that could assist ongoing operations.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities along the Kebbi border corridor, where armed groups have continued to carry out kidnappings, attacks on security formations and destruction of property despite intensified military and police operations.
Security patrols have since been strengthened in the area as authorities work to restore normalcy and prevent further violence.
