President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially written to the Nigerian Senate, requesting the screening and confirmation of Justice Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The request, read during plenary today, Tuesday, 27 January 2026, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to fill vacancies on the apex court bench and ensure the timely delivery of justice.
Justice Oyewole is a highly respected jurist currently serving at the Court of Appeal. He is widely recognized for his intellect, integrity, and landmark judgments during his time at the Lagos State High Court and the appellate level.
His nomination follows a recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC), which assessed his performance, seniority, and judicial temperament.
If confirmed, Justice Oyewole will join the elite bench of the Supreme Court, helping the judiciary reach its full constitutional complement of 21 Justices.
In the formal communication, President Tinubu urged the Senate to consider the nomination “expeditiously,” citing the critical role of the Supreme Court in the nation’s democratic stability.
The Senate has referred the President’s request to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. The process will involve:-
A public hearing where the nominee will be questioned on his judicial philosophy, past rulings, and understanding of constitutional law.
The committee will submit a report to the “Committee of the Whole” with a recommendation for or against confirmation.
The final decision will be made via a majority vote on the Senate floor.
