The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured the bronze medal at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a gruelling and dramatic third-place play-off against the Pharaohs of Egypt.
The match, held today, Sunday, 18 January 2026, at the Stade Mohammed V, saw Nigeria emerge victorious 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
Both teams, still reeling from their narrow semi-final exits, put on a tactical masterclass in a bid to end their tournament on a high.
The Opener: Egypt took an early lead in the 24th minute through a clinical finish by Mostafa Mohamed, capitalizing on a rare defensive lapse by the Nigerian backline.
The Equalizer: Nigeria responded with intensity in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Victor Boniface headed home a pinpoint cross from Ademola Lookman, sending the Nigerian supporters into a frenzy.
Full Time: Despite several late chances for both sides, including a spectacular save by Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali in the 89th minute, the match remained deadlocked at 1–1.
With no extra time played in the third-place match per CAF regulations, the game went straight to a shootout
Winning Moment: Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up to calmly slot home the final penalty, ensuring Nigeria’s podium finish.
Éric Chelle, Nigeria Coach:
“We wanted the gold, but leaving with the bronze is a testament to the resilience of this group. We played against a very tough Egyptian side today. This medal belongs to the fans who stayed with us after the semi-final heartbreak.”
Stanley Nwabali (Man of the Match):
“Going to penalties is always a lottery, but I felt confident. I’m happy I could help my country win this medal. We will come back stronger for the World Cup qualifiers.”
