The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, 20 March 2026, as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, following the completion of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement came after the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon across Nigeria on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by the Wazirin Sokoto, Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Sultanate Council Sokoto said it did not receive any verified reports of the crescent moon from any part of the country.
As a result, Thursday, March 19, will mark the completion of 30 days of Ramadan, in line with Islamic tradition.
“Friday, March 20, 2026, will therefore be the first day of Shawwal 1447AH,” the statement confirmed.
The Sultan urged Muslims across the country to use the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr to pray for peace, unity and continued progress in Nigeria.
He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the values of sacrifice, discipline and compassion observed during Ramadan.
Eid-el-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.
The festival is typically celebrated with special prayers, charity, and gatherings with family and friends.
Across Nigeria, preparations are underway as millions of Muslims get ready to mark one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar.
Security agencies are also expected to step up measures nationwide to ensure a peaceful celebration.
