The Delta State Government has condemned reported cases of harassment and sexual assault of women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, describing the incidents as “barbaric” and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the allegations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“We are calling on the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of these heinous acts and bring them to justice. No individual or group should be allowed to hide under the guise of a festival to perpetrate criminal activities,” Aniagwu said.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens, particularly women and other vulnerable groups.
Aniagwu urged community leaders and organisers of cultural events across the state to strengthen security arrangements and put preventive measures in place to avoid a recurrence.
He stressed that the government maintains zero tolerance for gender-based violence, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The controversy follows the circulation of disturbing videos and claims on social media allegedly showing women being assaulted during the festival in Ozoro.
Reacting, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the reports as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing,” confirming that an investigation is underway.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians questioning the persistence of violence against women and the tendency to excuse such acts under cultural or traditional settings.
Advocates say the development underscores the need for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women, as well as increased public awareness around consent and safety at public gatherings.
As of press time, no arrests had been made, but authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and prosecute those involved.
