The controversy surrounding the paternity of the late singer Mohbad’s son, Liam, continues to deepen, with the widow, Omowunmi Aloba, and the late singer’s family locked in a protracted legal dispute over the conditions of the mandated DNA test.
According to statements released by her legal team, Omowunmi is not refusing the DNA test itself, but is strongly rejecting the family’s attempt to have the test conducted at specific, hand-picked facilities, which her lawyers argue violates the principle of neutrality.
Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, through her legal representative, has consistently maintained that she has always been ready and willing to submit her son, Liam, for the DNA test to conclusively resolve the paternity dispute.
Her legal team argues that the family of the late singer, led by his father Joseph Aloba, has repeatedly filed applications seeking an order to have the test conducted exclusively in two hospitals of their choice (sometimes abroad).
The court has reportedly rejected the family’s requests to use their selected facilities. The court ruled that the test must be conducted in neutral and independent hospitals where neither party has a personal interest, to guarantee the integrity of the results.
Wunmi’s lawyer alleges that the repeated applications and subsequent withdrawals by the Aloba family are the primary reason the test has been delayed, not her refusal.
The Aloba family, on the other hand, maintains they remain resolute that the DNA test is necessary to clear all doubts regarding Liam’s paternity, especially given the controversy surrounding the late singer’s life.
The outcome of the DNA test is directly linked to the lawful administration of Mohbad’s estate, royalties, and property. The family has stated that they have appointed estate administrators and reserved a slot for Wunmi only if the DNA confirms Liam is Mohbad’s biological son.
Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, has publicly argued that Wunmi was never legally married to his son, claiming the traditional rites were not completed, further complicating her claim to the estate.
The dispute remains before the court, which is now faced with the task of appointing a mutually acceptable, neutral facility to carry out the test.
Until this fundamental dispute over the testing conditions is resolved, the DNA verification and the final burial arrangements for the late singer remain on hold.
