Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators of the recent terrorist attack on Abande community in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, describing the incident as a direct assault on peace and security in the state.
The governor issued the directive on Wednesday while condemning the attack, which occurred on Tuesday and reportedly claimed several lives, including that of a police officer, and led to the destruction of homes and property.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Terso, and made available to journalists in Makurdi, Alia vowed that those responsible would be tracked down and brought to justice.
“My heart goes out to the peaceful people of Abande,” the governor said. “This cowardly act of terror, which claimed innocent lives, including a gallant police officer, and led to the destruction of homes, is an assault on our shared humanity and an affront to the peace and security of Benue State.”
Governor Alia lamented that the attackers had once again challenged both the state and the nation’s security architecture, stressing that decisive action would be taken in response.
“The terrorists have again dared the state and the Nigerian security system. This incident must be addressed in a language they understand better,” the statement read in part.
He said security agencies have been directed to intensify operations in the affected area and surrounding communities, with clear instructions to apprehend all those connected to the attack. The governor also assured residents that additional security measures would be deployed to prevent further violence.
Alia urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations and operations.
The Abande attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents affecting parts of Benue State, raising fresh concerns about community safety and rural security. Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
