The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially handed over cheques totaling ₦1.28 billion to the Enugu State Government. The funds were reportedly recovered from the luxury real estate firm Sujimoto Construction Limited following an investigation into a stalled infrastructure project.
The handover ceremony took place today, Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at the EFCC Zonal Command in Enugu, marking a significant win for the state’s anti-corruption and asset recovery efforts.
The ₦1.28 billion represents a refund for a failed or unexecuted contract originally intended to bolster Enugu’s urban development or luxury housing sector.
The Investigation: The EFCC launched an inquiry following a petition from the state government regarding “non-performance” of contract terms despite significant mobilization funds being paid out.
The Settlement: Rather than a lengthy criminal trial, the recovery was achieved through a “settlement and refund” process facilitated by the Commission, ensuring the state’s funds were returned to the treasury promptly.
The Developer: Sujimoto, known for high-end luxury developments, has not yet issued a formal statement, but sources suggest the company complied with the refund to resolve the dispute amicably.
Governor Peter Mbah (represented by a senior state official) expressed gratitude to the EFCC for its diligence:
“This recovery is a testament to our administration’s commitment to transparency. Every kobo belonging to the people of Enugu must be accounted for. These funds will be immediately redeployed into our ongoing road and water projects.”
The EFCC Zonal Commander noted that this recovery is part of a broader mandate to ensure that state resources “don’t end up in private pockets” under the guise of failed contracts.
