The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen attacked the residence of Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Saturday through the 8 Division Nigerian Army and Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Army said the viral Facebook post claiming that the residence of Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral were attacked was entirely fabricated.
The military said investigations confirmed that no such incident occurred anywhere in Sokoto State.
“We categorically debunk these unfounded claims as there was no attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah or the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral,” the statement said.
According to the Army, the cleric remains safe and is currently carrying out his Easter engagements without any disruption, while security around the cathedral and across the state remains in place.
The Army also assured residents that it remains vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property across Sokoto State, noting that security operations have been intensified to ensure peaceful Easter celebrations.
The statement, signed by Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division, said the military is working in collaboration with other security agencies to maintain security across its area of responsibility and urged the public to disregard false information capable of causing panic.
The Army also advised residents to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports on social media.
