Ahead of the highly anticipated Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, the FCT Police Command has moved to reassure residents of their absolute safety. During a strategic security briefing today, Sunday, 25 January 2026, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT declared that comprehensive security measures have been finalized to ensure a “peaceful, transparent, and violence-free” voting process.
With political activities reaching a fever pitch across the six area councils, Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Gwagwalada, Kuje, Bwari, Abaji, and Kwali—the police have emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward thuggery and electoral malpractice.
The Police Command outlined a multi-layered deployment strategy to safeguard voters, electoral officials, and materials including thousands of conventional police officers and tactical units, including the Special Forces and Anti-Riot Police (PMF), will be stationed at all polling units and collation centers.
A formal announcement regarding the restriction of vehicular movement on election day is expected shortly, typically running from midnight to 6:00 PM to prevent the “importation of thugs.”
More so. motorized patrols and aerial surveillance (drones) will be used to monitor “flashpoints” where political tensions are known to run high.
The police are coordinating with the NSCDC (Civil Defence), the Nigerian Army, and the DSS to form a joint task force for the duration of the polls.
Focus on “Flashpoint” Areas
Security agencies have identified specific zones within the FCT that require extra vigilance:
AMAC (Abuja Municipal): Due to its high population density and political significance.
Gwagwalada & Kuje: Areas that have historically seen competitive contests and minor skirmishes.
Border Communities: Increased patrols on the outskirts of the FCT to prevent non-residents from infiltrating the voting process.
