A prominent coalition within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sounded the alarm over the fresh impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, warning that the action is a direct assault on the peace accord brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The APC Vanguard for Peace and Unity (AVPU) issued a strongly worded statement today, Friday, 9 January 2026, calling on the pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly to “cease fire” in the interest of national stability.
The group argued that the sudden push for impeachment, following a period of relative (though fragile) calm, dishonours the intervention made by the President in late 2023 and reinforced throughout 2024.
The AVPU noted that the 8-point peace document signed at the Villa was intended to allow the Governor to govern while the Assembly exercised its legislative duties without “malicious disruption.“
The group’s spokesperson, Chief Segun Olalere, stated: “By resuming this impeachment charade, these lawmakers are not just fighting Fubara; they are undermining the authority and the political wisdom of President Tinubu, who personally mediated this crisis.”
The group warned that the move could trigger a fresh wave of protests and unrest in the Niger Delta, which would jeopardize the “Budget of Growth” implementation and oil production stability.
While the lawmakers claim their actions are purely constitutional, the APC group highlighted a perceived “political hypocrisy” in the current standoff:
The situation is further complicated by the fluid party identities in Rivers State. While the PDP National Working Committee is currently split over the crisis, the Rivers State APC has found itself in the unusual position of defending a Governor who was elected on a PDP ticket but is widely believed to have shifted his loyalty toward the President’s camp.
“We cannot allow Rivers State to become a theater of war again. If the President’s word is no longer enough to maintain order within his own political circle, then we are heading for a constitutional crisis that will affect the entire Federation.” – Chief Segun Olalere, AVPU.
Of note, if the impeachment proceeds, it could lead to a protracted battle in the Supreme Court regarding the legitimacy of the defected lawmakers.
More so, Pro-Fubara groups, including the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), have already threatened “total shutdown” of state activities if the Governor is removed, which could lead to another “State of Emergency” declaration if the police are unable to contain the clashing factions.
